Puri Beach, Two Minutes from Your Room
The sea is a two-minute walk from the resort, which changes how you use it. You are not making a trip to the beach; you are stepping out before breakfast and coming back for coffee.
Go at Sunrise
Puri faces east, so the sun comes up out of the water. That is the hour the beach belongs to fishermen bringing boats in and to people walking the tideline, and it is by some distance the most pleasant time of day between March and June. The light is worth setting an alarm for even if you are not otherwise an early riser.
Which Stretch to Walk
- Puri Beach — 0.2 km, about a two-minute walk. The stretch directly in front of the resort, and the quietest at dawn.
- Puri Lighthouse — 0.5 km. A short walk south and a useful landmark to navigate by.
- Blue Flag Beach — 1.2 km. The certified stretch, with changing rooms and cleaner facilities.
- Neeladri Beach — about 1.5 km, and generally the least crowded of the four.
Swim where the lifeguards are, walk where they are not.
A Word on the Sea
The Bay of Bengal at Puri has a real undertow and the shelf drops away faster than it looks. Swim only on patrolled stretches, stay within your depth, and treat the local lifeguards’ advice as final — they read this water daily. The calmest months are November to February; the monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy surf.
What to Take
Less than you think: the walk back is two minutes. A hat and water in the warmer months, and something to cover your shoulders if you are continuing on to the temple afterwards.
